The art of work

Guide for working at VOUW

This is a brief guide to working successfully at VOUW, as how we work is just as important as the work itself. This guide is inspired by Tom Sachs' 10 Bullets video, which provides a strong foundation for how to work.

1. Use a digital to do list

Don’t store things in your head. Write every task down, in a digital to do list. Find the right do to list app for you here. Learn how to use a to do list here

For every task, no matter how big or small, make a plan of attack before you start. Think of the actions you’re about to take, the equipment you’ll need and the time every step takes.

2. Make a plan of attack

3. Start making it

Design is a physical thing. Start making a physical work as quick as possible. Use paper only to organise or communicate your thoughts. Use a computer only for research or detailing.

4. Every tool has a home

Our tools are organised in a French Cleat system. After using them, always clean up your workspace and bring back the tools to where they live.

5. Know each tool in and out

Every tool is a killing machine. But they’re also your best friend. Learn about the tools before using them. Ask others if you’re not sure about using them.

6. Always use Torx

Torx (or Star) is the king of all screw drives. Never use Philips screws or flat screws, unless there’s absolutely no other way. If there is another way, throw the Philips screws away, so we’re never faced with the thought of using them again.

7. Always use locknuts

A nut with no locking mechanism will eventually loosen and fall off which might at some point hurt your work and your mental wellbeing. Only use nuts without locking mechanisms for prototypes and if you absolutely know what you’re doing. In other occasions, treat them like a biochemical hazard.

8. Use YouTube for everything

A problem? A question? First go to YouTube before asking anyone else. Also check YouTube for things you think you know. YouTube will learn you how to actually do it.
